Two other trailers were being unloaded next to me. An old man (I heard him say that he was 95) and his son were being helped by a couple who had just finished with their load. The old man was extolling the virtues of neighbor helping neighbor and his dependence on the mercy and grace of God. The conversation quickly turned to decrying the general state of things in the nation, and people's lack of interest in the wellbeing of their brothers and sisters. Then the old man said, "And this president we've got today...well that's all I'm gonna say." There was a consensus among them that they would pray for him. The distinct impression I had was that the president was so lost all they could do was pray.

I wondered why these Christian folks couldn't see a connection between providing health care for their neighbors and their stated values. I would feel comfortable with betting on the prospect that the old man was receiving social security payments and was enrolled in medicare.Camp Papahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03918758148818443535noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4065910512732060865.post-22347916163891458632009-09-05T11:54:45.461-05:002009-09-05T11:54:45.461-05:00Good ideas, Dave ! If you think about it(and I know you have), the power in the South has most often been in the hands of Old White Men.From the bad old days of slavery till now, they have pitted one segment of society against the other. They always seek and find some hook issue to fire up emotions. And you're absolutely right that rich people's power and money are protected by these tactics! It is a mystery to me that lower and middle class whites will go "to the walls" to maintain some corporation's power even if it means they are hurting themselves.Your article speaks the truth as I see it. And another thing: many of the poor people who are being manipulated either have no or inadequate health insurance coverage and live below the poverty level.I read an article recently of hundreds of people lined up to receive free medical care at a fair ground provided by doctors. They were literally being treated in animal stalls. A man standing in line with no insurance, getting a free check-up was decrying Obama's public option and the threat of Socialism !! Is there ANY hope for this mess ?? God help us because I'm not sure Congress can or will.delainehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01519073646760104147noreply@blogger.com
