I frequently just travel around looking for other blogs which exist on the Internet, and the various, creative ways in which people express themselves. Thanks for sharing.Inspector Clouseauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09373932797333038561noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4065910512732060865.post-67961442953854101962010-04-11T21:14:18.398-05:002010-04-11T21:14:18.398-05:00Thanks, Pam. Glad you're reading the Family o' Blogs.

Becky and delaine, thanks for pointing out the environmental angle of this. A coop mine operation would be a lot more invested in the environmental impact of what they're doing than a big for-profit, because it's their kids who are drinking the local water and swimming in the streams.

It reminds me of a quote attributed to Walter Reuther about broadening the scope of what we normally think of as "labor issues." He said...

"The labor movement is aout the problem we face tomorrow morning. Damn right! But to make that the sole purpose of the labor movement is to miss the main target. I mean, what good is a dollar an hour more in wages if your neighborhood is burning down? What good is another week's vacation if the lake you used to go to is polluted and you can't swim in it and the kids can't play in it? What good is another $100 pension if the world goes up in atomic smoke?"Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11154351095467482965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4065910512732060865.post-68361480643791351162010-04-11T18:51:47.054-05:002010-04-11T18:51:47.054-05:00It is a crime what coal mining is doing to the env...It is a crime what coal mining is doing to the environment! Especially mountain top mining where the streams and creeks are filled with tailings.I obviously don't know the answer to mining versus our need for coal. But every time I read or hear about a mining disaster, I think of that old movie "How Green Was My Valley". I think giving power to the miners is an excellent idea! Thank you for educating me.delainehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01519073646760104147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4065910512732060865.post-45446904477524542492010-04-10T20:14:13.181-05:002010-04-10T20:14:13.181-05:00Great post on this and good connections between Ch...Great post on this and good connections between China and WV. I did not know about the Tower Colliery coop. Really interesting. Reading this also made me think of that article in the NYT not so long ago about the towns in WV where the water is so bad that all drinking and even bathing water is brought in on trucks. It seems that a coop would be more actively engaged in mitigating that kind of environmental disaster, for certain.Beckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06517252487552392654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4065910512732060865.post-53345369771966563982010-04-10T07:48:05.101-05:002010-04-10T07:48:05.101-05:00that company would rather spend its money lobbying...that company would rather spend its money lobbying to protect what they want to do rather than spending the same money protecting their workers. it's like the people who are OK spending money on wars but not on health care. really f-ed up and backwards. thanks for your writing. you say what I am thinking very well. you and your sisters have good blogs.Pamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04284136308875776151noreply@blogger.com
